Yes, you can use a coat hanger and a baby bottle brush to do the same thing.  However on the plus side this kit does not smell like moth balls and sour milk.  

If you just spent over a hundred dollars on a Hydration system you owe it to yourself to get this as an investment.  

Take care of your gear, and it will take care of you.
