Esstac Double 556 KYWI (pronounced "kiwi")

Don't Like bungee topped magazine pouches on your HSGI Wa/Wee Plate Carrier? Prefer an open topped pouch for rapid magazine changes? Then look no further- introducing the Double 556 KYWI by Esstac.

The Esstac Double 556 KYWI (Kydex Wedge Insert) allows you to have the option of swapping out all your existing Esstac bungee retention inserts on your HSGI Wa/Wee with a quick open topped friction retention design, or swap out just a few for quicker access while leaving the rest of the mags with the added security of the bungee topped inserts. When both magazines are inserted, the Kydex has enough compression to hold both magazines in place even when the pouch is upside down, yet with a quick pull on the magazine they release for speedy deployment.  Remove one mag?  No problem, the elastic band on the inner mag slot will retain the remaining mag- ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT.

The spring loaded nature of these Kydex inserts keep the mouth of the Magazine pocket fully open for ease of magazine reinsertion yet hold the mags tight under compression. The apex of the KYWI that contacts the magazine sits above the Mag catch bump when the magazine is in place, so the mags "click" into place.

Fits AK74 Mags like a glove. February 22, 2013

I was unsure whether or not the 5.56 KYWI would fit Tapco AK74 (5.45x39) magazines or not, but I went ahead and bought them anyways because the mags are only a few milometers wider than Pmags. I am currently running 4 double KYWIs in my Pantac Woosatch-e and couldn't be happier. These things are super retentive and even have the elastic strap for even more ridiculous retention when training or running high-stress drills. These things are exactly what I was looking for!

Was frustrated with bungee cords/flaps on my Wasatch and tried these.  Absolutely love them!!!  Holds mags well but still easy to access.  Also keeps the front of the carrier much neater with less clutter and obstructions.
When you pull the front mag out the back mag tilts forward making it much more accessible.  You have to try them.

I run a 2 different carriers, an Eagle CIRAS and a Wasatch. I run a pair of Kydex pouches on my CIRAS for quick access and nylon for load carriage and I have always wished my 'satch was more like my quick draw style of the kydex. Now, it's closer.

The KYWI isn't magic, it won't transform your carrier into the more mainstream double kydex pouches. It does however bridge the gap between slick nylon and kydex rather nicely.

The KYWI's pop right in and are easy to manipulate. Reload speed is increased over the standard satch configuration. I found some of my KYWIs to be alittle looser then others when one mag is removed for I loop the HSG bungies around the rear mag horizontally to give them alittle added tension. Works great with PMags and GIs.

All in all I am very satisfied with the KYWI and would recommend it to anyone running AR style mags.

I prefer no bungeess or straps to retain mags, this was a simple convenient way to convert my nylon pouches to be as quick on mag changes as ridged kydex  holsters... Godd buy all around

I purchased these about two months ago for my Weesatch and I have to say, they are great! They hold both of the Magpul PMags in the open top pouch extremely secure. I would recommend them to anyone looking to use open top pouches.

And for the order/shipping of SKD Tactical - excellent, fast, and easy.  Would buy again.
